New Delhi, Oct 16:
The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the three election commissioners on a petition filed by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and 12 other INDIA bloc leaders seeking an independent, time-bound inquiry into alleged electoral irregularities.
The petition challenges decisions taken during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and raises concerns over the functioning of the poll panel.
The petitioners have sought scrutiny of the process, including alleged irregularities in the deletion of voters’ names and changes to voter registration procedures.
The Election Commission’s response will be crucial to the court’s examination of the allegations. The poll panel and the BJP have rejected allegations of political bias in the electoral roll revision exercise.
The court also sought an explanation from Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut over his remarks concerning the Chief Justice of India following the Opposition’s protest march on October 12.
