Chennai, Oct 23:
Widespread rainfall under the active northeast monsoon has inundated several residential areas in Tamil Nadu and sharply increased water levels in reservoirs across the State.
Heavy overnight showers caused waterlogging in parts of Chennai and several southern districts. Sankarankoil in Tenkasi district was among the areas that experienced significant inundation following intense rainfall.
In Kanyakumari district, persistent rain affected the Kollamcode municipal area, where floodwater entered several houses. Residents faced difficulties moving out of their homes, while vehicles and essential household belongings were submerged or damaged.
Civic officials were working to remove accumulated water from affected residential areas. They were also inspecting drainage systems to identify and clear blockages that could have worsened the inundation, officials said.
The rain also affected road conditions and infrastructure work in Chennai. Several locations, including Avadi, T Nagar, Velachery and Old Washermenpet, reported damaged road surfaces, potholes and muddy depressions. Ongoing infrastructure work was also disrupted by the downpour.
At the same time, the rainfall brought a sharp rise in water levels in reservoirs across the State. Increased inflows into dams and water bodies are an important development during the northeast monsoon, although sustained heavy rainfall can also raise the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
The India Meteorological Department warned that light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, was likely at isolated places in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, Namakkal, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore and Thanjavur districts.
The continuing rain has highlighted the need for effective drainage maintenance, prompt removal of waterlogging and close monitoring of reservoir levels. Residents in flood-prone locations have been advised to remain alert to local weather warnings and follow instructions issued by the authorities.
