Chennai, Oct 26
Actor Dhanush’s meeting with thousands of women supporters on the outskirts of Chennai has fuelled speculation about his possible entry into Tamil Nadu politics. However, the actor has not made any official announcement about his political plans.
More than 2,500 women members and functionaries of the Dhanush Welfare Movement from various parts of Tamil Nadu attended the meeting held at a private college in Semmenchery on Sunday. Dhanush interacted with the supporters, posed for individual photographs and presented each of them with a silver lamp as a Deepavali gift.
The actor refrained from making any political speech at the event. When reporters asked about his possible political entry, he said he was happy to meet his supporters and extended Deepavali greetings, without directly addressing the question.
The meeting comes days after Dhanush’s fan club was reorganised as the Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam (Dhanush Welfare Movement). The organisation’s restructuring and the unveiling of a new logo have added to speculation that the actor could be preparing to expand his activities beyond cinema.
The development has drawn comparisons with actor-turned-politician and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, whose fan network evolved into a political movement before the launch of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. TVK went on to win 108 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections and form the government.
Dhanush had earlier urged his fans to take up social welfare activities in their neighbourhoods rather than limiting their involvement to film-related events. The movement’s recent organisational changes have renewed questions about whether it could eventually develop into a political platform.
The meeting also drew attention because of its focus on women members. Some supporters expressed expectations that Dhanush would enter politics, while others reportedly criticised the long wait for his arrival. He reached the venue in the afternoon, although the meeting had been scheduled for the morning.
Political leaders have also commented on the speculation. Tamil Nadu Congress chief Manickam Tagore suggested that the BJP was looking to promote a film personality as a political front. A TVK leader also referred to the possibility of new political entrants receiving backing from forces in Delhi. These were political assertions, and no evidence establishing a link between Dhanush and the BJP was presented in the reports.
For now, Dhanush has kept his political intentions unclear. Whether the Dhanush Welfare Movement will remain focused on social service or evolve into a political organisation remains to be seen.
