Chennai, Oct 27:
A Chennai-based software employee has been taken into custody in connection with hundreds of bomb-threat emails sent to locations across India, including Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, according to police.
The accused, identified as Sharad Subramanyan, allegedly created fake email accounts to send between 700 and 800 bomb-threat messages. Assistant Commissioner of Police Srikant Goud of Shamshabad said several cases linked to the threats had been registered over the past two years.
Police said 25 cases were registered in 2025 and another 17 in 2026, taking the total to 42. Investigators are examining the cases and recording the accused’s statement to establish the extent of his alleged involvement.
According to the police officer, the accused had completed postgraduate studies and worked in the United States for a few years before returning to India. He was reportedly experiencing personal distress following a divorce.
Investigators said the accused also expressed opposition to the DMK government in Tamil Nadu. He allegedly told police that personal stress and political grievances had prompted him to send the emails in an attempt to trigger investigations against DMK leaders. These claims are part of the ongoing investigation and have not been independently established.
The threatening messages prompted security responses and investigations at multiple locations. Police are now working to connect the cases registered in different places and determine the full scale of the alleged activity. Further legal action is expected as the investigation progresses.
