Lahore, Oct 28:
The Punjab government in Pakistan has extended the preventive detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s three sisters — Aleema Khan, Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan — by another 30 days under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance.
The extension was communicated to the Lahore High Court on Monday by a representative of the provincial government. The court subsequently disposed of a petition seeking the sisters’ release.
The three women were detained in September amid efforts by supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party to mobilise protests demanding his release. Aleema was detained on September 20, while Uzma and Noreen were taken into custody the following day.
PTI leaders have criticised the continued detention, describing it as politically motivated and questioning the need for preventive custody. The provincial government has extended the detention orders, while the dispute has added to tensions surrounding the jailed former prime minister and his party.
