New Delhi, Nov 3:
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the deadline for all 10 Indian Premier League franchises to submit their player retention and release lists by two days, moving the cut-off from November 15 to November 17. The decision gives teams additional time to finalise their squad combinations ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction, which is scheduled to be held in Goa on December 16.
The original deadline coincided with the fifth and final One-Day International between India and New Zealand, scheduled for November 15 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The scheduling overlap is understood to have prompted the board to revise the deadline, allowing the retention announcements and related activities to take place without competing with an international fixture. All 10 franchises have reportedly been informed of the revised schedule.
While the retention deadline has changed, the auction date and venue remain unaffected. The player registration process opened on November 2 and will close on November 23. Following the submission of retention lists, franchises will have until December 1 to provide their final list of players they wish to target at the auction. The final auction register, including the player sets, is scheduled to be released on December 3.
The trade window has already witnessed significant movement ahead of the mini-auction. Delhi Capitals have brought back former captain Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants, with left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav moving to Lucknow in the exchange. In another deal, Delhi Capitals traded fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad in return for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari. These moves are expected to influence the franchises’ remaining squad-building plans.
The December 16 auction will also feature an unusual scheduling overlap, with India’s second ODI against Sri Lanka set to take place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on the same day. However, the BCCI has not indicated any plans to change the auction schedule. The event’s return to India after three years, with Goa as the venue, will be another notable feature of this year’s auction.
The upcoming auction will be the final mini-auction of the current IPL cycle, with a mega-auction expected ahead of the 2028 season. Franchises will therefore be looking to address immediate squad requirements while keeping the next major restructuring in mind. With the retention deadline now approaching on November 17, attention will turn to which established players are retained, released or made available for bidding as teams prepare for the 2027 campaign.
