Deepavali brings with it a massive annual exodus of people from Chennai to their hometowns. As thousands of families prepare to celebrate the festival with loved ones, the demand for public transport surges, often leaving passengers struggling to secure tickets and facing overcrowded terminals.

The government and transport authorities must recognise this predictable rush as an annual challenge and plan well in advance to ensure that festival travel remains safe, comfortable and hassle-free.

Operating more special buses and trains is essential to meet the extraordinary demand during the Deepavali season. The Transport Department and Southern Railway should coordinate their efforts to identify high-demand routes and introduce additional services to destinations across Tamilnadu.

Special buses must be operated from multiple locations in Chennai to ease congestion at major terminals, while additional trains and coaches should be deployed wherever feasible. Advance announcements on schedules, routes, ticket availability and boarding points would help passengers plan their journeys instead of scrambling for transport at the last minute. Online booking facilities must also be strengthened to ensure transparency and prevent ticketing irregularities.

Last-minute chaos, overcrowding and long queues can be avoided only through timely planning and effective execution. Authorities must monitor booking trends and respond swiftly to rising demand. Adequate staff, clear passenger information and proper crowd management at bus stands and railway stations are equally important.

Deepavali is a festival of joy and togetherness, and travel should not become a source of anxiety for families. By operating sufficient special buses and trains, and ensuring seamless coordination between transport agencies, the government can make the festive journey safer, smoother and more dignified for thousands of passengers.
