Chennai: Probably for the first time in the history of government primary schools, the Thiruvancheri Panchayat Union Public School at Selaiyur in the city suburban area has introduced ‘SMS Scheme’ to send homework to students.

Speaking to ‘News Today’, headmistress S J Panimayam Fernando, said, “The move was initiated to grab the attention of parents so that they will come forward to enrol their children in government schools. We want to show that we are no lesser to our private counterparts. We provide quality education and now we have technology too to assist us.”

She further said that in this new method, teachers and parents can stay connected always.

“Any important announcement from the school will be passed through this system. This will be convenient for everyone,” she added.

It may be noted that recently, around 20 dropouts from the Narikuravar community were once again enrolled here, as part of the school’s Kalvi Valarchi Naal celebrations.

Panimayam said, “All study materials and uniforms were given to the students for free. They were also taken in a procession along with their parents, during which ‘Kalvi Seervarisai’ worth Rs 40,000 was donated by sponsors.”

“Last year, we had 115 new joinees and this year, so far we have 45 students who have been enrolled,” she stated.

AEEOs Baskaran, Robert Willams, Ramesh, BRC supervisor incharge Arokiya Mary and BRTE Priscilla were also present on the occasion.
