Chennai: The sex for marks scandal involving Nirmala Devi, which was speculated to have the involvement of many ‘big shots,’ has taken a new turn with the confession made by the former assistant professor.

Following Crime Branch – Criminal Investigation Department’s (CB-CID) report that the Devanga Arts College’s former teaching staff lured her students to please assistant professor Murugan and former research scholar Karuppasamy, the division bench of the Madras High Court, which was hearing the case, has recommended it to be transferred to the Chief Justice.

The report filed before the division bench comprising Justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and K Kalyanasundaram said, “Based on the confession of accused Nirmala Devi and statement of witnesses, it was found that two other accused, namely Murugan and Karuppasamy, were involved in this case. Both these accused persons were in close association with the accused Nirmala Devi. She had illegal intimacy with both these accused and she has gone to an extent by promising to please them by providing her own college students for sexual favours. Both the accused Murugan and Karuppasamy asked Nirmala Devi to seduce young innocent college girls to offer sexual favours to them. They had repeatedly insisted that college girls shall be arranged for them for providing sexual favours and thus they had tried to sexually exploit the young college going girls for their personal benefits,” the report stated.

The report was filed when the court took up a petition filed by D Ganesan who sought the case to be transferred to special investigation team led by a woman DIG.

DIGITAL EVIDENCE

Additional Superintendent of Police, S P Lavanya in her affidavit said the Nirmala’s confession was confirmed based on the calls she made to Murugan and Karuppasamy.

“Call data records between the accused were analysed and relevant evidences of conspiracy between the three accused is established. The calls between the three were corroborated based on their voluntary confession and the facts were verified. The seizure of all digital evidences was done following the due legal procedure,” she said.

Nirmala Devi was arrested in April after four students of the college accused her of trying to lure them into sexual work.

An audio clip of the phone conversation of the professor with the students were submitted to the police following which it created ripples.

Sources said Nirmala Devi made many revelations to the special investigation team during interrogation and some of them were shocking in nature.
