Chennai: As part of the Smart City project, three new bridges will be constructed at a cost of Rs 161 crore in Chennai. The bridges will come up at key junctions in the city to ease traffic congestion.

Corporation officials said there is steady rise in traffic build ups in several stretches such as Teynampet, Anna Salai, Eldams Road and T Nagar junction.

“This makes it difficult for the commuters from Broadway to reach Guindy and Anna Salai. Commuters have to wait for longer duration wasting fuel and time,” the official added.

He further said a tender has been floated for Rs 122 crore to construct bridge in these stretches. Apart from this, tender has been floated for Rs 28.50 crore for construction of an escalator to connect Mambalam Railway station and T Nagar bus terminus.

“The escalator is being planned considering the crowd that visits the commercial hub,” the official added. The corporation has also decided to connect Aamullaivaayal canal and Puzhal by constructing a new bridge at a cost of Rs 10.71 crore.
