Chennai: The Tamilnadu Assembly is likely to meet 4 January 2019 and the session is expected to be brief but stormy, with the Opposition reportedly planning to raise multiple issues in the House.
As per rules, the Assembly has to be convened once in six months. Since the House last met 9 July, it has to be convened before 9 January next year. Hence, sources say it has been decided to convene the session 4 January.
Since this is going to be the first sitting of the New Year, it will commence with the customary address by the Governor. Then the business advisory committee will meet and decide on the duration of the session.
Since the Lok Sabha elections will be falling in May, budgetary allocations for six months are expected to be made during the session.
This is the first meeting of the session after the Madras High Court upheld the disqualification of 18 AIADMK legislators supporting rebel leader and R K Nagar MLA, T T V Dhinakaran.
Sources say the Opposition parties, led by the DMK, are planning to raise a string of issues. Also, portraits of former chief minister M Karunanidhi and Ramasamy Padayatchi are expected to be unveiled in the Assembly hall.
