Chennai: A man has been arrested by city police for marrying a minor in Ayyapakkam, Thirumullaivoyal. According to police, Rekha (name changed) (15), a resident of Perambur married her relative Sridhar alias Shivakumar (24) of Ayyapakkam with the permission of both families.

On 11 November, the families travelled to Mailam Murugan Temple, Villupuram, for the marriage ceremony. After the wedding, someone who attended the function tipped off the Child line. Police said the duo were in love for the past four years.

While Sridhar worked as an electrician, Rekha dropped out of school after class nine. The Child line volunteers along with Avadi Women Police and Thirumullaivoyal Inspector came to Sridhar’s house. Rekha was sent to a shelter home in Kelly’s. Sridhar was arrested by the police under Child Marriage Act.
