“One can cure several diseases and maintain a healthy lifestyle with yoga,” says 48-year-old Yoga master Muthukrishnan, a resident of Ramakrishna Nagar.

A practitioner for about 20 years, he says, “I learnt the art form in my childhood, and took this up as a profession after an accident.

Doctors said there were problems with my vision after the incident and that it cannot be cured. But then I started practising a particular technique which helped me in restoring my eyesight. Only after this, I thought of teaching this to people.”

He further says that he learnt and teaches certificate courses in Kanyakumari, and later familiarised himself with specialised therapeutic courses from Svyasa Bangalore, Deemed University (Yoga).

“At Bihar School of Yoga (first deemed Yoga university in the world), I came across Swami Sureshananda and Swamini Suryaprabhananda, who influenced me with their skills and taught the best of techniques. I also had the blessings of Hanumantha Rao (Hanuji) of Swami Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari,” he adds.

“I have taught in several schools and also visited the residences of differently-abled people to teach them. I do not collect any fee from those who are not able to pay,” he said.

He further stated that there are about 52 aasanas which, if practised regularly, can cure any disease.

Explaining in detail about a few, he said, performing Utchasana can bring down mental pressure and help maintain a stable mind.”Before doing meditation, people should do Pranayamam which will refresh both the mind and the body making it easier to concentrate only on meditation,” he added.

Muthukrishnan’s wife Prabha, too, is a yoga trainer. “My son, who is ten years old, has already won several competitions and performs several asanas,” he added.
