Chennai: Valasaravakkam is going to be smarter than before as solar panels will be installed at 39 Corporation buildings.

The civic body will commission solar panels on top of the buildings under Smart City Funds. “The panels have the capacity to generate 22 units per day. The project has already been successful in previous buildings in Basin Bridge,” said an official from the city Corporation.

“Apart from the usage of the civic body’s buildings, the excess energy is likely to be used for streetlights in the neighbourhood. The work was started on 23 August and will be completed on 28 February 2019. As far as Valasarvakkam Zone is concerned all 39 buildings will be commissioned with solar panels before 31 December this year,” said the official.

On 25 October, the civic body wrote to TANGEDCO to procure bi-directional net metres for sending back the generated power to the grid. The project cost for the generation of 3.064 MW in 662 buildings of the Chennai Corporation has been estimated at Rs 24.03 crore.

Along with Valasaravakkam Zone, 106 buildings in Tiruvottiyur, 46 in Manali, 28 in Madhavaram, 141 in Tondiarpet, 118 in Royapuram, 142 in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, 117 in Ambattur, 91 in Anna Nagar, 103 in Teynampet, 107 in Kodambakam, 111 in Alandur, 93 in Adyar, 76 in Perungudi and 57 in Sholinganallur will get solar panels.
