Chennai: Catapulting the issue of the clearance given by the Central Ministry of Environment and Forests for Karnataka to make a detailed project report to build a balancing reservoir across the Cauvery at Mekedatu, the DMK today said an all-party meeting will be convened tomorrow at 10 am at party headquarters Anna Arivalayam to discuss the future course of action.

A press release from the party said the meeting has been called for as permission for the construction of the dam would affect the drinking water needs and cultivation activities of the State to a large extent.

Sources say a bandh may be called for by parties attending the meting.

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has said they are 100 per cent sure of constructing the reservoir.

Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had yesterday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the Water Resources Ministry to forthwith withdraw the permission given to Karnataka to prepare a detailed project report for Mekedatu reservoir.

The proposed reservoir, to be built at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, will occupy 4,000 acres of forest land in Kanakapura Assembly constituency and also a small parcel of land from the neighbouring Malavalli.

Complete details regarding the area of the project, cost, environmental impact were submitted in the draft proposal by the Karnataka government.

As soon as the Centre gave its go-ahead for the Mekedatu project, Union Minister of State for Finance, Pon Radhakrishnan, made his stand clear that he was totally opposed to the project.
