Chennai: A Kerala-based actress and her driver were arrested by the police there for possessing and attempting to sell drugs.
According to a source, Aswathy Babu (22), who appears in both film and television, was arrested along with her driver Binoy Abraham in Kochi. The duo were caught in possession of MDMA, a psychoactive drug commonly known as ecstasy.
MDMA worth several lakh rupees was found in her possession, sources added. The police reportedly seized 58 grams of MDMA. They were arrested from her flat in Kochi, while the duo were waiting to deliver the drug to a customer.
The police claimed they got a tip off about the rave parties that take place in her flat and decided to carry out the raids. On further probe, it was found out that the actor’s driver helped her get drugs from Bengaluru.
Police are continuing with the probe to uncover the drug peddling network. It may be noted that in a sensational case three years ago, actor Shine Tom Chacko, along with three women models were arrested in Kochi for allegedly possessing cocaine.
The actor and the models were reportedly caught during a police raid in an apartment. Shine told police that he got the contraband from Goa.
The actor was subsequently charged under Narcotics law 27, 29 and 21B, he was later granted bail.
In September this year, the Excise Department had seized illegal drugs worth Rs 200 crore in Ernakulam.
