Anyone who walks by the narrow stretches in Choolaimedu High Road, is welcomed by the unpleasant sight of bins overflowing with garbage.
These bins get piled up with wastes from nearby shops and houses, the moment they are emptied. The garbage then gets accumulated around the bin and on the roads, it is learnt. Periyar Nagar’s Sherfudeen Street is one such example.
A bin placed right outside an urban primary health centre, has garbage dumped in front of the main entrance gate. Bigger vehicles that pass by, drive over the trash and dirty the surroundings further.
“While sometimes we see no bins placed here, other times, the piles of trash are not cleared. The lorries come once in two or three days. The stench is unbearable,” said a resident nearby, who wished to remain anonymous.
“People come in two-wheelers and dump even when no tri-cycle or a trash can is placed,” the resident adds.
According to Shobana, a doctor at the health centre here, “In the absence of a bin, there is trash all over the road. It is only when we call up the Corporation, does it send workers to clean the space.”
It is said that this issue is not limited to this particular area alone. Speaking about the situation near a paying guest facility at Thiruvenkadapuram Street, Ranjeetha Devi, a resident of the PG said, “It is difficult to stay here with all the garbage, mosquitoes, and the foul smell. Nobody seems concerned about this.”
