Chennai: The number of blood banks need to be brought down and supervisors and counsellors have to be appointed to monitor them, said Tamilnadu Government Doctor’s State Association State president Dr Senthil.
Speaking to press in Madurai, he said, “The incident of not carrying out proper tests and transfusing HIV-infected blood to a pregnant woman comes as a shocker. The mistake is committed by the lab technician as the donor was identified to be HIV positive way back in 2016. The process of collecting blood, screening and other processes are being carried out as per the guidelines set by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). It is the negligence of workers that has led to such a catstrophic incident.”
He also further suggested that the relatives must step forward to donate blood if their kith and kin are in dire need of blood.
This comes days after an eight-month pregnant woman was transfused with HIV blood and two women from Mangadu, Chennai and Salem made similar claims. The first incident came to light after the donor himself informed the blood bank about it.
However, he attempted suicide and was taking treatment in Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH). He died on Sunday.
