New Delhi: Domestic passenger vehicle sales continued to be in the slow lane in December with major players reporting either marginal increase or decline in offtake during the month on account of adverse macro-economic conditions.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) and Tata Motors posted single-digit growth during the period under review while Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) reported decline in sales.

The country’s largest carmaker, MSI, reported 1.8 per cent increase in domestic sales at 1,21,479 units last month, against 1,19,286 units in the year-ago period.

Sales of the company’s mini cars comprising Alto and WagonR were at 27,661 units, compared to 32,146 units in December 2017, down 14 per cent. Similarly, sales of compact segment models such as Swift, Dzire, etc., were also down 3.8 per cent at 51,334 units, against 53,336 units in the year-ago period.

However, sales of utility vehicles, including Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and Ertiga were up 4.9 per cent at 20,225 units last month.

Rival HMIL reported 4.6 per cent increase in domestic sales at 42,093 units in December 2018, compared to 40,158 units in the year-ago period. Honda Cars also posted 4 per cent increase in domestic sales at 13,139 units in December 2018. It had sold 12,642 units in the domestic market in the year-ago month.

Tata Motors reported 1 per cent increase in domestic passenger vehicle sales at 14,260 units last month, compared to 14,180 units in December 2017.

On the other hand, M&M saw passenger vehicle sales decline 3 per cent during the month at 15,091 units, against 15,543 units in the year-ago period.

In the two-wheeler segment, Royal Enfield saw its domestic sales decline 14 per cent to 56,026 units last month, compared with 65,367 units in December 2017.

EXPERT SPEAK

Senior VP and director-Sales and Marketing, HCIL, Rajesh Goel, said, “The market continued to remain challenging in December. However, with lucrative year-end offers on many of our models and strong performance of new models Amaze and CR-V, the company recorded 4 per cent sales growth in December 2018.”

President-Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, Mayank Pareek, said, “In December 2018, we strove to maintain our growth trajectory during what was a rather sluggish period for the entire auto industry.”

President of Automotive Sector, M&M, Rajan Wadhera, said, “(In the) domestic market, challenges relating to tight liquidity and low buying sentiment continue the de-growth for December. We hope to see good performance in March quarter, owing to… the launch of our new XUV300 in February.”
