Chennai: The Supreme Court has overturned the order of the National Green Tribunal that allowed the reopening of Sterlite Copper industry in Thoothukudi.

In its order today on PILs, the court said it would not allow the reopening of the factory that is alleged to have caused immense environmental pollution and water contamination, leading to the death of many people in the last few years.

But it allowed writs and appeals to be filed in the Madras High Court in the case.

Earlier, Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar had said the Tamilnadu government and the people of the State do not want the Sterlite factory to be opened again in Thoothukudi.
