Chennai: After various projects such as renovated parks and pedestrian plaza being implemented at Pondy Bazaar, here comes yet another initiative – ‘Vertical Garden’, at GN Chetty Road.
“The facility, for which work has already commenced in the flyover area, will come up at eight pillars of the flyover in GN Chetty Road covering red and green-leafed plants,” sources from the Chennai Smart City Limited (CSCL) said.
“Metal frames will be fixed along the pillars which will hold the vertical garden, following which the civic body will fix potted plants,” they added.
It was also informed that similar gardens were installed in few other cities like Bengaluru and Nagpur, which proved to be successful.
“A move like this will not only convert the space into greenery, but also prevent defacing of the flyover’s pillars,” commented an official of the civic body who is involved in the project.
“The metal frame will ensure that the main structure of the bridge, is not damaged by the growth of the plants. Also, both the garden and frame can be dismantled any time, if needed,” he pointed out.
On the other hand, residents seem to be happy with this new development. “It is certainly a good move to develop a garden in a busy area like this. The same idea should be extended to other flyovers in T Nagar,” felt Krishnakumar, a resident of the locality.
