Chennai, Feb 27: The State transport department has seized 18 vehicles for operating as bike taxi without obtaining necessary permission.
The vehicles, with white board, attached to two Bengaluru-based bike taxi service providers, were operating in some parts of the city.
Officials said they seized the vehicles and issued notice to the firms because the services were in contravention of the existing Tamilnadu Motor Vehicles Rules.
Transport department officials said a proposal to amend the rules was sent to the government for approval.
“If it is approved, then private firms will be able to obtain permit and operate geared and gear-less bikes as taxis. Other rules that should be followed while operating such services have also been proposed,” the official said.
The app-based services were introduced in Chennai earlier this month and were already in use in Bengaluru and Delhi.
Services were provided with Rs 15-20 as base price and Rs 3 for every additional kilometre.
