Chennai: Rajini Goud (42) is a woman of few words, but her hands speak volumes.
Her home in Thiruvanmiyur stands testimony to this, with shelves and walls, all adorned with her creations.
For instance, on her table, are placed a kettle and accompanying tea glasses painted in deep blue
with Rajasthani motifs.
It is a spin off to something she saw at a store. But now, she has received over ten orders for the same set, with similar colours and design.
Speaking to News Today, she says, “I was interested in art, right from childhood. I initially learnt to make soft toys, and paint on fabric and charcoal. Gradually, my skills diversified. I started doing murals, clay figurines and went on to learn embroidery from my mother and aunt.”
The kind of work she does, includes hand and ribbon embroidery, murals, decoupage, kettle painting, mehendi, basic calligraphy, name plates and glass painting. According to Rajini, one of her favourite pieces is Jharokha, an art from Rajasthan.
She explains, “It is done on medium-density fibreboard wood, that has to be cut according to the design and then worked on clay. I did some Kundan work on it and crafted my own version of jharokha . It was exciting to realise that my design was helping me create the best painting
I have ever made, and that success motivated me to continue making more clay murals.”
Before moving into the neighbourhood, she was in Sowcarpet, where she had a number of people
from varied age groups and backgrounds, approaching her to learn art and craft, it is learnt.
