Chennai: There was a major fire here at Foreshore Estate this morning in which 30 huts were gutted.
The fire mishap took place at Doming Kuppam that lies close to the shoreline. The place has high-rise tenements as well as hutments.
This morning, the fire is said to have started in a hut in the kuppam. According to initial reports, a transformer close to a hut burst and the fire from it set alight the hut.
Sources said the locals had already complained that there was trouble with the transformer and had appealed to the authorities to set it right. They say now that their plea fell on deaf ears.
Luckily, there was no casualty. As it is summer, most residents tend to sleep on the sands of the Marina and thus escaped from the fire. But the absence of people could also be the reason why there was heavy loss of property.
In the meantime, fire and rescue service personnel rushed to the spot and put out the flames.
