Chennai: With construction work underway for the grade separator at Pallavaram, all vehicles proceeding to Tambaram, are forced to go through Old Trunk Road, resulting in heavy traffic during peak hours.
This has made reaching Pallavaram bus stand a Herculean task for commuters.
Speaking to News Today, Nadhamuni, a resident of Pallavaram, says, “The construction work is going on at an extremely slow pace. While it is easy to pass through the Old Trunk Road during afternoons, we find it tough after dusk. We want a traffic police personnel to be posted here, to ensure everything is in order.”
Kannan, another resident here, says, “Due to heavy traffic, pollution is also high, to the extent that we are unable to open our windows. We also fear for our children’s safety. They cannot go out and play. Speeding vehicles pose a serious threat.”
“The situation turns worse on Fridays, due to the weekly market in the locality, with people from all areas coming and setting up their shops here. They get plenty of customers too. As a result, the vehicular congestion increases,” rues Jayamani, who lives in Zamin Pallavaram.
“There were a few mishaps too reported on this stretch. Blame it on motorists who go in full throttle. A mechanism to check speeding vehicles should be introduced by the police,” he adds.
“Our problems will end only if the grade separator work is completed at the earliest. It has passed several deadlines. Once traffic is restored on GST Road stretch, everything will become normal,” feel many here.
