Kannur: Nearly a month after C O T Naseer a former Marxist councillor was attacked at Thalassery allegedly by a group of CPI(M) supporters, the Congress held a day-long protest demanding the arrest of a CPI-M MLA A N Shamseer for his alleged involvement in the attack.

Kannur MP K Sudhakaran, a senior leader in Congress, warned that the party would take law into its hands if action was not taken against those involved in the attack that took place on 18 May. “There should be a stipulated time for arrests to be made. If the police does not make necessary action to take into the custody those who have sent the goons to attack Naseer, the Congress party will take the law into its hands,” said Sudhakaran during the protest.

It is to be noted that Naseer had recently contested in the recently concluded general elections from Vatakara Lok Sabha constituency as an independent candidate. The police have arrested five people in the case so far.

The issue was also discussed in the ongoing Kerala assembly session. Raising the issue in the assembly on 11 June, senior Congress Leader K C Joseph had alleged Naseer had mentioned the name of Shamseer in the statement to the police but no action has been taken yet. The UDF members staged a walkout when the Speaker refused to allow a notice for adjournment motion seeking proper investigation into the attack on Naseer.

Another senior Congress leader and Vatakara MP K Muraleedharan alleged that Shamseer who present in the assembly during the discussion, but he had remained silent throughout.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan rejected the claim. He stated that police had taken Naseer’s statement thrice and nothing like that was in his statement. He further said the CPI(M) did not have any enmity towards Naseer.
