Chennai: Two months annual fishing ban along the east coast ends today midnight. The ban was introduced in 2003 and it is helping both the marine environment and the fishermen community.

When the ban was introduced in the city, the fish catch was about four lakh tonnes and in the past 15 years, the catch has increased by a tonne, according to reports.

The fishing community is also demanding higher compensation during the ban as they are jobless during the breeding period. However, the ban would not apply to country boats which would continue fishing as usual.

Tamilnadu has more than 1,076 km-long coastline and is one of the leading States in marine fish production.
