Hyderabad: Even as the country is reeling under the protest by thousands of doctors from private and government hospitals in several States, including Chennai, Delhi, Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, in connection to the attack on two doctors by a mob in Kolkata, the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJUDA) yesterday threatened to go on an indefinite strike against the State government’s decision to enhance the retirement age of doctors in medical college hospitals from 58 to 65.

Health Minister Eatala Rajender had recently announced Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had approved the proposal to increase the retirement age. TJUDA chairperson P S Vijayender speaking to a news agency said strike notices have been served across the State in government hospitals and that from today they would boycott medical services and out-patient and elective surgeries indefinitely if the decision was not revoked by the government. The association submitted a memorandum to the health secretary last week.

The increase in the retirement age of teacher-doctors may result in huge loss to the young doctors who are aspiring to be recruited as assistant professors for the next 10 years, Vijayender was quoted saying. He further stated that for the past 10 years, there has been no recruitment and no time-bound promotions for the teaching staff.

last week in this regard. also demanded the government to implement the regular calendar year for recruitment of assistant professors and career advancement scheme immediately wherein faculty can be re-designated as ‘designate associate professor and designate professor and also to re-appoint professors upon retirement on contract basis in required departments.
