Chennai: A water recycling plant will come up at the coaching terminal, Tambaram Railway Station, to face water scarcity in future.
Southern Railway already has two recycling plants at Basin Bridge and Chennai Egmore which were installed in 2015.
At present, water is being brought in wagons from Chengalpet due to lack of rainfall in the city. Sources said on an average 21,600 litres of water is needed to fill the tanks of a 24 coach train and about 350 litres of water is needed to clean the inside and outside of a coach.
It is also said the coaching terminal at Tambaram will get a quick watering system for coaches.
The system uses high pressure pumps to re-fill water inside coaches within five minutes. This is important because when water levels are low, the conventional systems take longer to fill water in coaches. This affects the punctuality of trains as they have to stop at wayside stations longer to fill water.
An automatic coach washing plant like the one in Chennai Metro Rail’s yards will come up at Tambaram railway station.
