Chennai: With the recent announcement of upgrading Avadi to a Corporation, the demand to upgrade Tambaram Municipality, a long-pending request of residents has become more prominent.

Residents have been requesting to merge the local bodies near Tambaram and upgrade it to a Corporation.

K Ramakrishnan, executive committee member of the Sarvamangala Nagar Residents’ Association, said, Tambaram is a vast developing area and upgrading it, will be helpful in implementing government schemes without any hindrances.

P Viswanathan, convenor of Chitlapakkam Residents’ Coordination Committee who has been long advocating for the upgradation, said, “The creation of the 15th Avadi Municipal Corporation is welcome. However, it is unfortunate and disappointing that the proposed New Municipal Corporation by incorporating all Southern suburbs’ local bodies with Tambaram as headquarters, has not been considered favourably,” he said.

He further noted that a majority of the civic bodies in the Southern suburbs, do not have underground sewerage system and all basic services are grossly inadequate.

“Town Panchayats do not have Sanitary Inspectors and no technically-sound person is available. All neighbourhoods here are densely populated and require Municipal Corporation status for good governance and uniform development of basic infrastructure, such as underground sewerage system, solid waste management, water supply, sanitation, roads and street lights,” he said.

He added that what necessitated Avadi and its adjoining local bodies to be upgraded as Municipal Corporation, the same necessitate upgradation of Tambaram and its adjoining areas too.
