Chennai: After repeatedly refusing to back down on his resignation decision, Rahul Gandhi resigns from the post of Congress President today.

Hours after declaring that he no longer held the post, he tweeted, “it was an honour to serve the Congress party whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. I owe the country and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love.”

According to a media report, a new party president would be chosen within a week. Earlier in the day, Rahul said Congress should quickly decide on the new president without much delay and that he was no longer in that process but would continue to be in the party and work for it.

It is being speculated that a non-Gandhi may take charge, and if so, it would the third time that a member outside of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty takes charge of the grand old party.

In the recently held elections, Congress bagged only 52 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. Following this, Rahul quit as Congress president on 25 May after announcing that he took full responsibility for the rout.
