Chennai: In line with the Corporation’s initiative of segregating waste into perishable and non-perishable items and converting the former into natural fertilisers, one such facility has been opened in Kannammapet at T Nagar, recently.
After converting the waste, fertilisers are being sold at various locations in the neighbourhood at a rate of Rs 20 per bag, for the benefit of residents to set up gardens in their homes.
Speaking on this, an official involved in the project said, “The segregation process commenced sometime ago. It helped to start a composting plant in T Nagar.”
“Disposed domestic waste is dumped in a huge pit dug up in Kannammapet near the burial ground. After a waiting period of 30 to 45 days, this will become manure and by adding EM solution (made with natural ingredients), it will become a fertiliser,” he said.
“EM solution functioning as an accelerator, reduces the composting period from three months to one month. All the ingredients (waste) are mixed together and the solution is sprinkled on it to get the fertiliser,” he pointed out.
About distributing these, he said, “While segregation of waste by residents is made possible, our Corporation also encourages to grow plants at homes.”
“To support them in this process, the civic body is selling the fertiliser made in the above facility in conveniently packed covers at different locations like parks, Corporation ward (127 to 142) offices and Amma unavagams situated in the neighbourhood,” he stated.
“Each packet contains one kilogram of this plant food containing the requisite Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium,” informed the official.
Apart from the facility at Kannammapet, the Corporation has began its operations at various other locations in the city too, in this regard.
