Chennai: Every person with diabetes should be helped to lead a normal span of life in perfect health, said MV Hospital for Diabetes head and chief diabetologist, Dr Vijay Viswanathan.

The hospital recently launched an endocrinology clinic which provides comprehensive diabetes and endocrine management headed by a senior endocrinologist from AIMS, New Delhi.

According to a press release, ”A new vascular unit is installed for peripheral angiogram and angioplasty to benefit people with diabetes who have non-healing wounds or pale necrotic wounds. Angiogram helps diagnose the blockages or narrowing in the blood vessels by mapping the flow of blood in the arteries carrying blood to the extremities. If any abnormality is observed, angioplasty, a minimally invasive procedure, is used to open the blocked artery in leg/arm using stents for better flow of blood.”

Suggesting ways to lead a healthy life, Vijay Viswanathan, in the release, said, ”Control your diabetes right from day one of diagnosis, never skip your medicines, keep your fasting blood sugar below 110 mg and PP below 160, start insulin if the tablets do not control, maintain the BP below 140 /80 always, keep the LDL cholesterol well below 100 mg, diagnose kidney, eye, heart and foot complications at an early stage to prevent kidney disease, blindness, heart attack and amputation, never walk barefoot, reduce the quantity of rice and take more fibre rich food and vegetables, exercise is very important to make our body’s insulin work, avoid fasting and feasting and use the right type of footwear.”

Regular visits to the diabetologist for check-up, consultation and advice for any modification in medicine, diet, life style habits to avoid complications is a must, he said.
