Chennai: With rain lashing the city from last night and posing traffic hurdles in many areas this morning with its continuous spell, India Meteorological Department today said showers will continue for the next five days in Tamilnadu.

With the onset of the North East monsoon, it has been raining in several parts of the State from yesterday.

The rains which began last evening continued this morning as well. Short and intense spells of rains were seen in several areas in the city and the suburbs as well. The Met department said this pattern will continue for the next few days.

Meanwhile, the Met department has said the first low-pressure area of the North-East monsoon is developing near the Arabian sea.

A preparatory cyclonic circulation has formed over in and around Maldives this morning and this is expected to set up a low pressure over the next two days a little distance to the North-East over the Lakshadweep Islands.

As far as Chennai is concerned the sky condition will be overcast. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas. As it is always, rain was accompanied by traffic jam in several areas with water clogging and damaged roads making vehicles move inch by inch. School and college students found it difficult to reach their institutions due to the rain.

Poonamallee registered the maximum with 61mm rain while Kancheepuram witnessed 53mm, Chembarambakkam lake 51 mm, Meenambakkam 46mm, Guindy 45mm, Shollinganallur 24mm.

It may be noted that North East monsoon accounts for about 48 per cent of Tamilnadu’s annual rainfall of around 945 mm.

Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised against venturing into sea in Kanniyakumari today and tomorrow.
