More than 100 people actively participated in the Mega Rangoli Contest conducted by ‘Talk Media’, Chennai’s largest publisher of neighbourhood weeklies, at Nanganallur Sunday evening.

Chennai: Enthusiastic residents made the streets of Nanganallur glitter with colour as Talk Media conducted its Mega Rangoli Contest successfully yesterday.

The competition was held in two categories – Juniors (Under 15) and Seniors (16 and above) and it had a good number of participants with more than 100 entries. Women and girls drew rangolis of different designs and themes that attracted the eyeballs of many in 7th, 8th and 9th Streets in Nanganallur.

Colourful kolams on women protection, global warming, protecting environment and patriotism captured the attention of visitors.

Executive Director, News Today, Maalaisudar and Talk Media, Kausalya Jawahar, spoke about the significance of rangoli on the occasion. ”Kolams drawn with rice flours serve as a food to many insects and in earlier days, they were drawn in front of houses after smearing cow dung which served as a disinfectant. Apart from this, drawing kolam gives women a high level of acceptance to things than men as women draw it despite knowing that it will last not more than two hours. Rangolis also give happiness to anyone just by seeing them and participants of this competition have given the biggest prize of happiness to others.”

Seethalakshmi, a resident of the neighbourhood and a scholar in Sanskrit and Tamil, was the judge for the event. Bhuvaneshwari and Rithika, a mother-daughter duo won the first place in seniors category.

S Sundara Harini and AV Anandi won the second place. Also, six teams comprising Jothilakshmi Ravi; N Vijayalakshmi and Nithyashree; Manjula Ravichandran and Rajambal; Dhanalaksmi; Mythili S and Sudarsanan N; Sathya N and Gayathri V were given additional prizes.

In the juniors, K M Nethra won the first place, Padmavathy and Kaviya, Sai Shruthika and Jenisha won the joint-second prize while Rithika E, Vishnu Priya with Aiswarya and Sri Raghul won the third place respectively.
