Subashri of Medavakkam makes it to Guinness Book of World Records

Chennai, Mar 9: Getting into the Guinness Book of World Records, is a dream for many. Not for Medavakkam resident Subashri, who has made it into the record books for the fourth time in crocheting.

Speaking to News Today, she said, she started crocheting from the age of 10. ”I got an interest because of my father’s motivation. I learnt the art from my grandmother, who is also my guru.” she said.

She further said that she dreamt of etching her name in the Guinness Book, when she was 15 years. ‘I wanted to achieve a world record, for recognition’, she said.

Following this, she founded the Mother India Crochet Queens in 2015. ”Once the strength of our group increased, we made our first Guinness record. We broke the one set by South Africa of 3,377 square meters for the largest crochet blanket. We made the largest one measuring 11,148 square metres on 31 January 2016.” she said.

Subashri further said for their second attempt, they wanted to set a new record by making the longest scarf. ”The Guinness gave us a target of five kilometres and with over 700 members, we set a new record by making a 14.09 kilometre-long scarf on 21 May.” she said.

The group did not stop there, they went for a third record and this time they wanted to create the largest display of crochet sculptures. ”With 58,917 sculptures, we created a new record by breaking the previous one held by Britain.” Subashri said. When most people would stop after a hat-trick, the team pushed for the fourth time.

”We showcased 66,158 crochet Christmas decorations last year. With this, we were able to break the previous record of 44,616 crochets achieved by a British group- Women’s Weekly.” she said.

”The icing on the cake is that all the materials that were used in their attempts, were given as charity to children’, she stated, adding that she is interested to teach crocheting to as many people as possible through NGOs, colleges and schools.
