Minister Doraikkannu laid to rest in native village with State honours

Chennai: The mortal remains of Agriculture Minister R Doraikkannu, who died battling Covid-19-related complications late on Saturday night at a private hospital in Chennai, were laid to rest in a coconut grove, in Vanniyadi, near his native village Rajagiri in Thanjavur district, with State honours, on Sunday.

A three-time MLA, he is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Doraikkannu and hailed his contribution for the welfare of society.

“Saddened by the demise. He made noteworthy efforts to serve the society and empower farmers. Condolences to his family and supporters in this sad hour,” Modi said.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, who are the joint coordinator and coordinator of the ruling AIADMK, respectively, recalled the late Minister’s contributions to the party.

Palaniswami and other Ministers visited the private hospital in Alwarpet to pay floral tributes, while Panneerselvam and State Ministers paid homage to Duraikannu at Rajagiri village.

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, DMK president M K Stalin, PMK founder S Ramadoss and other leaders have also condoled the death of Doraikkannu.
