The Attorney General appearing for Union government has informed the Supreme Court that the Centre will take a decision on Class 12 board exams in two days saying, ‘Give us time till Thursday and the government will come with a final decision.’

A Special Bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari was hearing a petition by advocate Mamta Sharma seeking scrapping of exams in the present Covid-19 situation.

“No issue. You take the decision. You are entitled to it. If you are departing from the policy of last year, then you must give tangible reasons for it,” the bench told AG Venugopal. The bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari was hearing a plea seeking directions to cancel the class 12 exams of the CBSE and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) in view of the current situation.

The petition, filed by Advocate Mamta Sharma, seeks to cancel the Class 12 board exams administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) in view of the Covid-19 health emergency.

“In view of the unprecedented health emergency and rising numbers of the Covid-19 cases in the country, the conduct of examination, either offline or online or blended in upcoming weeks is not possible and delay in the examination will cause irreparable loss to the students as time is the essence in taking admission in higher education courses in foreign universities,” the plea read.

Though Covid figures are coming down in the country, the situation is still not conducive to conduct exams, as safety of students is of huge importance.
