Chennai: Former Karnataka IPS officer K Annamalai, who hails from Karur district, was on Thursday appointed president of the BJP’s Tamilnadu unit.
He has been appointed to the important post after L Murugan, who was occupying it, was made the Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and Information and Broadcasting.
With the appointment of Annamalai, the party appears to have performed a balancing act in social engineering. While Annamalai belongs to the community of Vellala Gounders, Murugan is from the Arundathiyar community.
Annamalai, expressing happiness over his new assignment, said that the BJP in State was built by generations of leaders and cadres.
“It is a privilege to be one among them to build the party. My primary aim is to continue the good work done by many leaders and I will make sure that all the cadres’ and leaders’ sacrifices don’t go waste,” he added.
Annamalai further said, “We will take the Centre’s schemes to the people with a renewed aggression. More importantly, we will play the role of a strong opposition in terms of ideology and cadre strength. We will take every scheme and issue like NEET aggressively to every single Tamilian to help them understand the letter and spirit behind every scheme.”
Hailing from Thottampatti in Karur district, Annamalai, 36, did his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at the PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, and postgraduation in business administration at the Indian Institute of of Management, Lucknow, in 2010.
He joined the police force in 2011. He was the Superintendent of Police for Udupi and Ramanagara districts. He earned the reputation of being a tough officer.
