Chennai Metro Phase-2 takes proactive measures to prevent flooding during monsoon

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is ready with a comprehensive plan to ensure that the ongoing phase-2 metro construction does not lead to flooding or worsen waterlogging during heavy rains. Elaborate Flood Mitigation Measures CMRL has meticulously devised a strategy to address the challenges posed by the metro project. The plan covers both elevated and underground sections of the metro, with a particular focus on areas housing underground stations and smaller stretches of tunnels. An official from CMRL emphasized that flood mitigation measures are in place, and numerous pumps are on standby to manage excess water. Pumping Out Stagnant Water One of the key aspects of CMRL’s flood management plan is addressing stagnant water within underground stations. Any water that accumulates in these areas will be swiftly pumped out and directed through pipelines to nearby Storm Water Drains (SWD). Additionally, stagnant water will also be channeled to nearby water bodies and canals, preventing it from exacerbating flooding issues. Collaborative Efforts to Identify Vulnerable Spots: To ensure the success of these flood prevention measures, CMRL has collaborated with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). Together, they have undertaken the task of identifying vulnerable spots in each of the city’s 15 zones. An officer from GCC stated that potential issues are not expected on the elevated stretches since the water might accumulate within the construction sites. However, CMRL has taken steps to establish alternative arrangements for draining water in areas where SWD had to be demolished. @@@@
