Savukku Shankar, a 48-year-old activist and commentator, has been arrested for failing to appear for an investigation in connection with a drug possession case.
The case dates back to an incident in Palanichettipatti, Theni district, where Shankar was reportedly staying. Authorities seized 2.5 kilograms of cannabis from his car and from individuals, including his assistant. Following this, a case was registered against Shankar and two others.
The matter came up for hearing before Judge Chengmalach Selvan, who declined to accept Shankar’s petition and issued a warrant for his arrest. The judge also postponed the case hearing to December 20.
Acting on the court’s orders, the Chennai Thousand Lights police arrested Shankar at his office in T. Nagar. He is expected to be handed over to the Theni district police for further investigation, according to Chennai police officials.
The arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing case, which has attracted public attention due to Shankar’s high-profile activism. Further proceedings are awaited as the investigation continues.
