Samsung management has agreed to a wage hike of Rs 9,000 for workers at its Sriperumbudur factory as part of a written response submitted during conciliatory talks with representatives of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).
The talks were held at the Assistant Labour Commissionerās office in Irungattukottai following ongoing protests by workers demanding better wages and working conditions. CITU Kancheepuram district secretary, E Muthukumar, hailed the written response and the willingness of the Samsung management to hold discussions with the union as a significant victory for the workers.
āThe management, which had earlier refused to engage with the CITU-formed union, has not only held talks but also responded in writing to all 20 demands put forward by the union,ā said Muthukumar.
As part of the response, Samsung has offered an additional Rs 9,000 wage hike over three years, supplementing the Rs 5,000 increase announced earlier during the protests. The company has also agreed to a three-year agreement with workers. However, other demands, including a significant wage hike of Rs 36,000 and a reduction in working hours from eight to seven, were rejected.
Muthukumar criticized the managementās refusal to address certain demands, calling their reasons āfrivolous.ā He added that the union has not accepted the current response and plans to push for further negotiations in the next round of conciliation meetings.
