In a significant move to improve public transport accessibility, the Chennai district administration has announced the introduction of 72 new mini-bus routes under the Comprehensive Mini-Bus Scheme 2024. The scheme aims to enhance last-mile connectivity by providing better access to metro stations, railway stations, and bus termini. A notification has been issued inviting private bus operators to apply for permits, with the deadline set for March 10.
Nearly 50% of the new routes are planned to start or end at key public transport hubs. This strategic decision is expected to provide seamless connectivity for passengers traveling from major transit points to residential and commercial areas. Many parts of Chennai currently lack direct access to public transport, and the mini-bus expansion aims to fill this gap effectively.
The new routes have been divided across different parts of the city, with 33 routes allocated to North Chennai and 39 routes planned for South Chennai. This distribution takes into account the growing demand for better transport facilities in suburban and under-served areas. North Chennai, in particular, has faced challenges in public transport accessibility, and the additional mini-bus services are expected to ease commuting difficulties.
Under the new scheme, mini-bus operations will be restricted to eight zones within the Greater Chennai Corporation. These include Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasarawakkam, Alandur, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur. The inclusion of these zones indicates a focused approach to improving connectivity in areas where commuters often struggle with last-mile transport options.
By involving private operators in running these mini-buses, the scheme is expected to ensure better coverage, increased frequency, and improved service quality. The initiative is also aimed at reducing road congestion by encouraging more people to use public transport instead of private vehicles.
With rapid urban expansion and an increasing population, Chennai’s transport system requires continuous improvements. The introduction of these 72 new mini-bus routes marks a crucial step towards building a more efficient and accessible public transport network for the city.
