In a significant move to enhance development and attract investment across Chennai, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered an increase in the number of administrative zones in the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) from 15 to 20. The state government has decided to restructure the city’s administrative boundaries to improve governance, streamline urban planning, and ensure equitable growth across all areas.Currently, Chennai has 15 zones, which include Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur. The expansion to 20 zones is expected to bring better infrastructure, improved civic services, and faster implementation of development projects in newly emerging areas.
With Chennai witnessing rapid urban expansion, the reorganization of zones is seen as a crucial step toward balanced development across the city. The government believes that increasing the number of zones will boost investments, create better opportunities for businesses, and ensure efficient public service delivery in both core and suburban areas.
The restructuring is expected to focus on population density, geographical factors, and infrastructure needs, ensuring that each zone receives adequate resources and focused attention. The Greater Chennai Corporation is likely to release further details on the revised zoning structure and the areas that will be reorganized.
By introducing five additional zones, the government aims to make Chennai’s administration more efficient and responsive to the needs of its residents. The move is expected to strengthen urban governance, making it easier to plan, manage, and execute projects that support the city’s growth and sustainability.
