The Tamil Nadu Muslim League has welcomed the Waqf Amendment Law, stating that it will significantly contribute to improving the livelihood of Muslims and economically disadvantaged communities. The party’s founding president, Sheikh Dawood, emphasized the importance of swift implementation during a press briefing in Chennai.
He said the amendment aims to prevent illegal encroachments on Waqf properties and protect them from legal disputes. “We urge the government to implement the amended law immediately to safeguard these assets,” he stated.
Sheikh Dawood revealed that a state-level movement named “Ummathukana Waqf” has been launched to raise awareness about the law and the importance of preserving Waqf properties.
“There are several high-value Waqf properties in Tamil Nadu entangled in legal disputes. Despite being registered as Waqf land, some properties have been illegally sold to private entities,” he pointed out.
He criticized opposition-ruled states for opposing central laws purely for political reasons and urged both the central and state governments to carry out a detailed digital mapping of all Waqf lands across Tamil Nadu. “This will help protect traditional Waqf properties from unlawful individual encroachments,” he noted.
Sheikh Dawood further added that the properties must be used strictly for religious, charitable, and community welfare purposes. He also called for the establishment of fast-track courts to resolve Waqf-related disputes.
“This law has the potential to greatly uplift Muslims and the poor. We not only welcome it but also extend our full support to its implementation,” he concluded.
