Thiruvanmiyur bus terminal set to reopen by April

The Thiruvanmiyur Bus Terminal in Chennai, an important transit hub on the East Coast Road (ECR) and one of the city’s 35 key bus terminals, is set to reopen in April next year following an extensive renovation. The terminal, which currently handles more than 100 bus services every day, had long struggled with recurring waterlogging during rains, inadequate passenger amenities and insufficient parking space for private vehicles. The upcoming redevelopment aims to completely overhaul these issues and provide a more efficient and comfortable experience for commuters. The renovation project, taken up by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) on behalf of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), is being executed at a cost of ₹35.11 crore. Spread across 1.66 acres, the terminal will now feature a built-up area of 6,000 sq.m. The upgraded facility will include spacious waiting halls, well-marked ticket counters, designated boarding and alighting zones, a medical room, retail shops and resting rooms for bus crew. A prominent addition to the terminal is a three-storey main building and a two-storey commercial block. The redesigned layout will also include 13 bus bays capable of handling nearly 70 buses at a time, along with separate parking areas for cars and two-wheelers. Renovation work commenced in July and is progressing steadily, with officials confident of completing the project by April next year. Once reopened, the modernised terminal is expected to address the long-standing issue of waterlogging, streamline passenger movement and significantly enhance operational efficiency. The revamped Thiruvanmiyur Bus Terminal is set to offer smoother travel for thousands of daily commuters and will play a crucial role in strengthening Chennai’s public transport network. #@@
