Uncertainty Over Jana Nayagan Release on Jan 9 as Censor Case Verdict Set for Same Day

The highly anticipated Tamil film Jana Nayagan, starring Thalapathy Vijay, faces fresh uncertainty over its scheduled release on January 9, 2026, as the Madras High Court has indicated it will pronounce its verdict on the film’s pending censor certification on the same day.
Jana Nayagan — touted as Vijay’s final film before transitioning fully into politics — has been caught in a prolonged dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Although the filmmakers completed post-production and submitted the movie well in advance, the Board has not yet issued a final censor certificate, an essential requirement for theatrical release.
The High Court has informed that the judgment in the censor case will be delivered on January 9, the very day the film is scheduled to hit theatres. This timing raises serious doubts about whether Jana Nayagan can legitimately open as planned at 9 AM on Friday, as obtaining the censor certificate is mandatory before the first show.
Industry insiders note that if the verdict is delayed even by a few hours, the film’s morning premiere — a highly anticipated event among fans — may not be possible. Without the certificate, the release could be postponed to a later date, even though the producers and distributors had already geared up ticket sales and theatre allocations.
The censor dispute stems from the CBFC’s decision to refer the film for further review after an initial recommendation for a U/A certificate, reportedly due to objections raised in a complaint. The producers had argued that the film had complied with earlier suggested cuts and that no member of the public had yet seen the film, making such complaints questionable.
With Jana Nayagan poised to be one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year, coinciding with the festive Pongal season, the outcome of the High Court’s decision will be closely watched by fans, theatre owners, and industry stakeholders.
