Liquor sales at TASMAC shops in Tamil Nadu reached around Rs. 220 crore in a single day before Republic Day, when liquor outlets were given a holiday. Many customers bought drinks in advance because shops were closed on the holiday.Normally, TASMAC outlets sell about Rs. 150 crore worth of liquor in a day. But with the holiday coming, people lined up at the shops and bought more bottles than usual, pushing sales to Rs. 220 crore.
On the previous Saturday, sales were reported at about Rs. 190 crore. Over the two days together, liquor sales reached around Rs. 410 crore.
This shows how demand for alcohol rises before public holidays in the state.
