Manila, Jan 27: A passenger ferry with more than 350 people on board sank early Monday near Baluk-Baluk Island in the southern Philippines. Rescue teams saved at least 316 passengers and crew, but many people died or remain missing.The vessel, M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, was travelling from Zamboanga City to Jolo Island in Sulu province when it began taking on water and sank just after midnight. Officials said the ship was operating within its authorised capacity at the time.
The Philippine Coast Guard, navy ships, an air force helicopter, and local boats joined the search and rescue operation. So far, at least 15 people have been confirmed dead and dozens more are still unaccounted for.
Survivors told rescuers that the ferry suddenly tilted and water rushed in, throwing many passengers into the sea. Rescue workers brought survivors ashore and took them to hospitals for treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the sinking, while efforts continue to find those still missing.
