Washington, Feb 1: Protesters across the US staged a nationwide strike on Friday, calling for “no work, no school, no shopping” to oppose the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
The demonstrations were sparked by outrage over the killings of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse shot while recording Border Patrol officers in Minneapolis, and Renee Good, killed by ICE in January. Activists urged communities to “shut down” ICE, organizing walkouts, marches, and business closures in support of immigrants.
In Minneapolis, hundreds gathered outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building, confronting DHS agents before dispersing under threat of arrest. Students joined nationwide, with walkouts in Michigan, Georgia, and other states despite freezing temperatures. Some businesses closed, while others remained open but pledged proceeds to immigrant support organizations.
In Maine, residents marked the end of ICE enforcement surges, holding signs and criticizing the trauma caused to families and schools. Portland’s mayor and school officials emphasized civic dissent as essential to democracy.
In Los Angeles, thousands marched to the federal detention center, where federal agents used chemical sprays to disperse crowds. Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters joined the protests, denouncing ICE’s actions and highlighting the exercise of constitutional rights. The strike reflected widespread national opposition to Trump’s immigration policies.
